Con motivo de su próxima gira sudamerica, y con la velocidad en las comunicaciones que permite el internerd, la banda de punk californiano No Use for a Name nos concedio unos minutos de su tiempo para responder una breve entrevista, la cual se pudo realizar gracias a las facilidades brindadas por Gonzalo López y su rápida coordinación con la banda.

Hablando de sus etapas, ¿a que se debe el cambio de sonido ( y forma de cantar) y si nos pueden comentar un poco como fueron sus etapsas: la pre-Fat Wreck CHords, los primeros discos en la Fat, el exito mundial del Leche con Carne, su tendencia hacia las melodias sin mucha distorsion desde el More Betterness, y este nuevo album con mucho mas trabajo en la composicion musical?
Es debido a que antes del More Betterness solía fumar mucho y ahora no tanto. Pre-Fat fue una época experimental para nosotros, eran riffs juntos forzados y no un arte real a la hora de escribir. Pero sirvió en su propósito en aquella época. Cuando nos mudamos a Far no cambiamos nuestro sonido sino que sucedió, y de manera lenta. Leche con Carne fue uno de esos discos que salen de la nada, recuerdo que había dejado de fumar hierba por ese entonces, asi que muchas se volvieron claras para mí. Making Friends fue el disco más difícil de grabar y escribir, muy forzado y practicado. More betterness fue un buen tiempo en mi vida, las cosas simplemente iban bien. El escribir fue fácil, tenía un departamento pequeño cerca al centro de San José, Me emborrachaba, tenía parrilladas, pagaba una renta barata y escuchaba mucho a los Beach Boys. Me mudé a Sacramento para el siguiente disco, Hardrock Bottom, y ahí creo que escribí uno de los mejores discos. Creo que el siguiente, Keep them confused, es mi menos favorito. Ese disco me enseñó a dejarme influenciar por discos antiguos y sentir el sentimiento nuevamente, y de ahí salió el Feel Good Record of the Year.
Sabiendo que una banda es un equipo en el que todos aportan y hay un intercambio de ideas ¿Que tanto de este cambio musical y el afianzamiento/reconocimiento del sonido NUFAN tiene credito las guitarras de Chris Shiflett?¿Que tal la relacion con el y los demas ex-miembros de la banda? ¿Han tenido la oportunidad de ir de gira juntos con sus respectivas bandas?
No mucho. Chris era un gran guitarrista y antes que se fuera había empezado a contribuir más en el More Betterness. Como el slide de guitarras de Chasing Rainbows, fue su idea. Tenía una manera de añadir el ingrediente necesario sin imponerse en la estructura.
¿Cuáles son sus influencias musicales actuales?
The Killers, Gaslight Anthem, Ben Gibbard, Bob Dylan y Van Morrison.
La critica sobre el nuevo disco "The Feel Good Record of the Year" es unanime en comentar que la musica es como la fusion de las etapas pre y post more betternes, tienendo canciones que represantan ambas. Sabiendo que cada disco es el reflejo del momento (que engloba una serie de sucesos), y que cada uno tiene su propia interpretacion de la musica ¿Cómo interpretan los comentarios al respecto? ¿Qué sienten para ustedes que refleja este nuevo trabajo?
Este disco tiene muy buenas letras. Detesto decir esto pero son espirituales en cierto modo, no en le modo religioso sino relacionado al espíritu, el disco está centrado en el espíritu humano. Creo que he reexaminado de un lado a otro mi vida y la he plasmado ahí... Pensé en cosas extrañas mientras escribía esas letras. Como el trompetista hablándole a una persona imaginaria. A una persona o cosa que guarda por ti a lo largo de tu vida.
¿Cómo fue el proceso de composicion/escritura de los temas del nuevo albúm?
Divertido. Fue escrito en su mayoría en días soleados en mi casa, en mi jardín y luego en el pequeño estudio casero para ponerse furioso. Escribir letras como la de The Biggest Lie, en las cuales uno ya no puede decir lo suficiente, no sé si me entienden, hacen que las cosas suenen confusas, pero siento que esas letras son muy importantes.
¿A que se debe el nombre del nuevo disco?
Al sarcasmo. Las letras sobreponen una sombra más oscura la mayoría del tiempo, así que el sarcasmo es esa cosa mala que te hace sentir bien.
La gira sudamericana empieza aquí en Lima, ¿despues de 20 años como banda, que se siente salir nuevamente de gira a lugares donde antes no habian llegado como Peru?
Genial. Me gustaría dar una vuelta para visitar la ciudad un poco. Escuché que lima es bella y que la gente ahí es muy amigable, así que estoy esperando mucho el estar ahí. Y también interesado que tipo de audiencia tendremos.
En muchos de sus discos vienen temas escondidos o covers de otros artistas ¿veremos algo de esto en su presentacion en Lima? ¿han preparado algo especial? ¿tendremos chance de verlos tocar temas
pre-Leche con Carne?
No, es probable que no, pero si tocamos una buena mezcla de canciones nuevas y antiguas. Sabemos que la gente ansía escuchar ambas cosas.
¿Tienen referencia de la escena peruana? ¿alguna banda o artista? ¿tuvieron oportunidad de ecuchar musica de las bandas que abriran el show?
No, pero creo que tendremos la oportunidad de escucharlos esa noche. Soy monse cuando se trata de sabes de donde son algunas bandas. Solo escucho música. Ya no puedo esperar para estar en Perú.
¿Tienen influencias de algun artista de habla hispana?
Hmm. No realmente. Es difícil escuchar esas cosas por aquí a menos que sean mariachis o música por el estilo. La mayoría de estaciones de radio en San José son de Mariachis. Lo cual sé que es mexicano.
Que tal les va con el español, ¿quizas en algun momento puedan grabara algo en nuestro idioma?
Como Leche Con Carne? Yo estudié español en la secundaria, y era muy malo. Se algunas palabras.
¿Estan trayendo vinilos, discos, polos, etc para montar una feria con su merchindising?, siendo la primera fecha de sudamerica esperamos tener una buena feria de la banda.

¿Algún mensaje para le gente que planea ir al concierto, o los que aun estan pensandolo?
Si se lo pierden, quien sabe cuando regresaremos!, y para la gente que va a ir… sera un gran show. Gracias!

About the band phases: why has a change in the sound accoured (also in the way of singing). Can you comment a bit on your different phases?: pre Fat Wreck chords, the first records with Fat, the world hit from the album Leche con Carne, your tendency to melodies without much distortion from the More Betterness up to this new album with a lot more work in the musical composition.
It’s because I used to smoke a lot before more betterness and now I don’t. Pre fat was an experimental time for us, it was just riffs forced together and not a real craft to the writing. But it served it’s purpose at the time. When we moved to Fat we didn’t change our sound, it just happened very slowly. Leche was one of those records that just came out of nowhere, I remember I had quit smoking pot at the time, so a lot things became very clear to me. Making friends was the hardest record to write, very forced and very practiced. More betterness was a very good time in my life, things were just nice. Writing was easy, I had a tiny apartment near downtown san jose, I was getting drunk, having bbq’s, paying very low rent, listening to the beach boys a lot. I moved to Sacramento on the next record, hardrock bottom, and there I think I wrote one of the best records. I think the next, keep them confused, is my least favorite. That record influenced me to be influenced by our old records and get that feeling back, out came the Feel Good Record of the Year.
Knowing that a band is a team in which every member contributes and
there is a exchange of ideas: How much the musical change and
settlement/recognition of the NUFAN sound has to do with the guitar of
Chris Shiflett?, What about the realtionship with the rest of ex
members of the band?, have you all had the opportunity to go out on
tour with the bands you have aside?
Not too much. Chris was a great guitar player and was just starting to contribute more on more betterness before he left. Like the chasing rainbows slide guitar, his idea. He had a way of adding just the right ingredient without imposing on the structure.

The critique of the new album "The Feel good record of the year"
agrees that the music is like a fusion of other phases pre and post
betternes, having songs that represents both phases. As we know each
album is a reflection of the moment (which grabs a series of
happenings), and that each one of you has an own representation of the
music: How do you interpret those comments?, what you all feel this new
work reflects?
This record has really good lyrics. I hate to say this but they are spiritual in a way, not in a religious way but the way that they come from the spirit and the record is all about the human spirit. I think I really cross-examined my whole life and wrote it down...i thought weird things while writing those lyrics. Like the trumpet player, like talking to an imaginary person. A person or thing that looks over you throughout your life.
How was the composition/writing process in the new record?
Fun. It was mostly written on sunny days at my house, in the backyard, and then in the small home studio thing to get myself angry. To write lyrics like the biggest lie, where you just can’t say enough, you know? It makes it sound confusing, but I felt those lyrics are so important.
What is the name of the new record due to?
Sarcasm. The lyrics cast a darker shadow most of the time, so the sarcasm is that bad things should make you feel good.
The Southamerican tours starts here in Lima: After 20 years as a band,
what does it feels to get out on tour again, to places that you havent
been before like Peru?
Great. I like to sight see a bit. I here Lima is beautiful and people are very friendly so I am looking forward to it. And of course interested to see what kind of crowd will be there.
There are hidden tracks in many of your albums or covers from other
artits within the official tracks: We will hear some of those themes in
your show here in Lima?, have you prepared something special? would we
have the chance to hear you play themes pre- Leche con Carne?
No probably not, but we do play a pretty even ratio of old and newer songs. We know that people want to hear both.
Have you have any reference from the peruvian scene?, Do you know,
hear or heard off any band, artist or something alike? Did you have the
opportunity to listen to the bands that will open the show (Inyectores
and Rezaka)?
No, but I will watch them that night. I am pretty lame when it comes to knowing where bands are from. I just listen to music. But I can’t wait for Peru.
Do you have any influence of any spanish speaker artist?
Hmm. Not really. It’s harder to hear that stuff out here unless it’s like Mariachi music. Most radio stations in san jose are Mariachi. Which I know is Mexican.
What about your spanish?, maybe at some point you, will you record something in our language?
Like Leche Con Carne? I took spanish in high school, but I was so bad. I know small words.
Are you bringing vynil, cds, t shirts, etc to have a merch table
or any other type of merchandising?, beeing this the first date in
southamerica, we hope to have a good variety of merch.

Is there any message you want to give to the people that will assit to the concert or to the ones that are still thinking to go?
